The North Eastern Council (NEC), operating under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), has disbursed Rs 5.73 crore to Mizoram in February 2026. This funding aims to bolster infrastructure, agriculture, and public services in the state. As part of a larger sum of Rs 67.41 crore distributed in the Northeastern region during February, the allocation seeks to foster balanced regional progress, as per the DoNER Ministry’s official statement.
One of the key projects supported in Mizoram is the construction of a market building in West Phaileng, Mamit district. This endeavor is anticipated to enhance marketing infrastructure, providing improved opportunities for local farmers and traders. Furthermore, the NEC is aiding the establishment of a potato seed farm in Mizoram utilizing tissue culture and apical rooted cuttings (ARC) technology. This initiative aims to ensure the availability of high-quality planting materials, strengthen agricultural value chains, and enhance productivity among farmers.
Another notable project involves setting up a central medical warehouse in Aizawl, which will enhance medical logistics by upgrading the storage and distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies throughout the state. Additionally, the NEC is backing the establishment of a State Veterinary Information and Resource Centre to bolster veterinary services and support livestock development through enhanced technical resources and efficient information dissemination.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah serves as the Chairman of the NEC, with Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia as its Vice-Chairman. The council comprises Governors and Chief Ministers from all eight Northeastern states and functions as a regional planning body for the Northeast. The North Eastern Council, established to complement and supplement the developmental endeavors of the Northeastern states, has played a crucial role in advancing institution building, enhancing transport and communication networks, supporting power generation and transmission, and creating various infrastructural facilities to propel the region towards self-sustained growth.
