Seven Northeastern states are preparing for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls following the Election Commission of India’s announcement. The SIR will be conducted in a phased manner across 16 states and three Union Territories to enhance the accuracy and transparency of voter lists. Assam has already completed a similar exercise, with Meghalaya now gearing up for the SIR.
In Meghalaya, the Chief Electoral Officer Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari confirmed the state’s readiness for the SIR. Activities like training programs and house-to-house surveys will be conducted from June 20 to July 29, 2026. The draft electoral roll is set to be published on August 5, 2026, with the final roll scheduled for release on October 7, 2026.
Political parties in Meghalaya have been urged to appoint Booth Level Agents to facilitate the revision process at polling stations. The Election Commission emphasizes the importance of maintaining free, fair, and transparent electoral processes during the SIR exercise. Similar preparations are underway in other Northeastern states to ensure a transparent and participatory revision process.
