After the BJP’s historic win in West Bengal, Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim emphasized the strength of Indian democracy. Solheim commended Prime Minister Modi’s victory in the state elections, highlighting the high voter turnout of over 90%, surpassing Western election participation rates. He urged Western media to reconsider their portrayal of Modi, stating that India’s democracy is rooted in its traditions and history, not extremism.
Solheim noted the surprising election results in West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, highlighting the peaceful process and widespread citizen participation. He pointed out that despite initial doubts raised by Western media after the 2024 Parliament elections, the BJP’s recent victories in various states, including Assam and West Bengal, showcase a different narrative. Solheim encouraged looking to India for democratic inspiration amidst global challenges to democracy.
US President Donald Trump also congratulated Prime Minister Modi on the BJP’s breakthrough victory in West Bengal, marking the party’s first control over the state. The win ends the long-standing rule of the Trinamool Congress and strengthens PM Modi’s political position midway through his third term.
