President Droupadi Murmu revealed the names of Padma awardees ahead of the 77th Republic Day celebrations. The awards honor distinguished citizens across various fields like art, social work, science, and medicine. This year’s list includes 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri recipients.
The awardees, mostly unsung heroes, were chosen for their significant yet quiet contributions to society. The selection process, spanning three terms of the Modi government, emphasizes integrity over political affiliations. Notably, the awards recognize leaders from diverse backgrounds for their impactful work.
Among the recipients this year are former Kerala CM V. S. Achuthanandan, posthumously honored with Padma Vibhushan. Additionally, V Natesan, tribal leader, and ex-Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren received Padma Bhushan for their political contributions. The awards aim to acknowledge leaders from various fields, irrespective of their political leanings.
Former UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav was posthumously awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2023, while in 2021, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Tarun Gogoi were honored with Padma Bhushan. Over the years, several opposition leaders have also been recognized with top civilian honors.
