Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the West Bengal government for changing the venue of the 9th International Santal Conference, where President Droupadi Murmu was the chief guest, calling it “shameful and unprecedented.” He expressed disappointment on social media, stating that the incident had deeply hurt those who support democratic values and tribal empowerment. PM Modi directly blamed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal for disrespecting the President.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity of the President’s office, stating that it should remain above political considerations. He urged the West Bengal government and TMC to show respect towards the highest constitutional office and act responsibly. President Droupadi Murmu had expressed displeasure over the last-minute venue change for the Santal Conference in Darjeeling district, which was relocated due to alleged security concerns.
President Murmu highlighted the inconvenience caused by the sudden change of venue and noted the lack of interaction with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or any Cabinet members during her visit to the state. The event, originally planned in Phansidewa, was moved to a smaller venue in Gossaipur after permission was reportedly denied for the initial location. PM Modi’s comments followed President Murmu’s expression of concern regarding the handling of the event by the West Bengal government.
