Days after urging people to brace for challenges from the West Asia conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading by example by reducing his convoy size, a move likely to resonate positively with the public. He has instructed the Special Protection Group (SPG) to minimize the fleet size, setting new benchmarks in austerity measures. Recent visits to Assam and Gujarat saw truncated convoys, reflecting the Prime Minister’s commitment to efficiency.
Sources reveal that the SPG has started implementing these directives by reducing the number of vehicles while ensuring essential security components are maintained as per protocol. This initiative comes in response to criticism from the opposition, accusing the government of imposing hardships on citizens amidst global oil price shocks. PM Modi’s proactive stance on fuel conservation and cost-cutting is expected to influence other ministers and leaders to follow suit, promoting a culture of frugality within the governance structure.
During a recent visit to Hyderabad, PM Modi called on citizens to reduce fuel dependency and embrace public transport options like Metro and carpooling. He advocated for increased use of electric vehicles, advised against excessive gold purchases, and encouraged domestic travel over foreign trips amid the escalating West Asia crisis. In line with his appeal, the Prime Minister has also requested the inclusion of Electric Vehicles in his convoy, aligning with efforts to reduce India’s fuel expenses significantly.
In the upcoming days, various ministries and government departments are poised to adopt austerity measures such as carpooling, Metro travel, and scaling back on extravagant celebrations, following PM Modi’s lead in promoting resource efficiency and financial prudence.
