Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day official visit to Kuala Lumpur starting Saturday, following an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The visit aims to bolster the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Malaysia by reviewing and enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors.
India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, highlighted that the discussions during the visit will emphasize strengthening cooperation in crucial areas such as trade, technology, energy, and education. Both countries are eager to broaden their collaboration beyond traditional domains to align with changing regional and global priorities.
Anticipation is high in Malaysia, especially among the significant Indian diaspora, as preparations are underway for PM Modi’s visit. The visit is expected to further boost cooperation in trade, finance, security, and cultural exchanges, while fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
A key aspect of the visit will be PM Modi’s engagement with the Indian community through a large event named ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’ in Kuala Lumpur, showcasing the deep cultural and social ties between India and Malaysia. The event is anticipated to draw a large audience, featuring cultural performances by artists from various parts of Malaysia.
The ASEAN India Economic Council (AIEC) Chairman, Ramesh Kodammal, expressed enthusiasm for the visit, noting the warm reception from the Malaysian government and people. The visit is seen as a significant opportunity to elevate Malaysia-India relations to new levels, building on the existing bilateral trade of around USD 20 billion and fostering stronger business ties.
Members of the Indian diaspora are eagerly looking forward to the visit, with one individual recalling PM Modi’s previous visit a decade ago. The return visit is perceived as a testament to India’s commitment to nurturing robust bilateral and cultural ties, particularly with a nation that hosts a sizable Indian-origin community in the region.
Delegation-level discussions and the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding are scheduled to take place on Sunday.
