PMK founder Dr. S. Ramadoss expressed his approval of the Tamil Nadu government’s move to forgive crop loans for small and marginal farmers obtained through cooperative societies. He emphasized the need for broader relief measures to tackle the challenges faced by the agricultural community.
Ramadoss praised the government’s decision to cancel crop loans up to Rs 50,000 taken since last May, considering it a positive step. He also lauded the provision of partial relief for loans in higher categories, ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000 for farmers with loans between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh.
Highlighting the ongoing struggles of farmers due to various issues like natural disasters and financial constraints, Ramadoss suggested that the government should introduce more extensive relief packages to alleviate the financial distress in the farming sector. He stressed the importance of ensuring farmers have access to subsidized agricultural inputs through cooperative societies to reduce costs and enhance productivity.
Ramadoss urged the government to facilitate fresh loans for farmers benefiting from the crop loan waiver scheme through cooperative societies to support their agricultural activities seamlessly. He also called for extending partial crop loan relief to farmers beyond the small and marginal categories to safeguard their livelihoods and strengthen the agricultural sector, which he described as Tamil Nadu’s backbone.
