Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, visited Kochi briefly and presented the Priyadarshini Literary Award, established by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, to esteemed Malayalam writer and critic Dr. M. Leelavathy. Describing the 98-year-old scholar as an icon for Kerala and the nation, Gandhi praised her discipline, intellectual vigor, and dedication to writing.
Gandhi emphasized the importance of expressing views for the progress of nations, contrasting indifference with social responsibility. He commended Leelavathy’s simplicity, humility, and deep connection to Kerala, hailing her as a true embodiment of the state’s spirit. Congratulating her on the wisdom she has imparted over the years, Gandhi expressed anticipation for her reaching a century.
In her response upon receiving the award, Dr. Leelavathy expressed deep gratitude to the Indian National Congress for honoring her with an award named after late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Reflecting on the Gandhi legacy, she recalled Indira Gandhi’s commitment to secularism and praised the family’s sacrifices for the nation. Leelavathy admired Indira and Rajiv Gandhi for their values, expressing hope for Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s future success.
