A recent report from Motilal Oswal Private Wealth suggests that India’s macroeconomic resilience justifies a neutral stance on Indian equities, emphasizing an ‘overweight’ position on mid and small caps. The recommended portfolio allocation includes approximately 50% in hybrid or large caps, 40% in small and mid-caps (SMIDs), and 10% in global exposure.

The report advises a lump-sum deployment in hybrid strategies and advocates a staggered approach for pure equity-oriented strategies. Despite Indian capital markets lagging behind global peers in the short term, the report highlights the continued resilience of the broader domestic macroeconomic landscape. Small and mid-caps (SMIDs) have notably outperformed large caps significantly since the onset of the Middle East conflict.

Regarding fixed income, the report anticipates sustained elevated interest rates, with the RBI signaling a halt in the rate-cut cycle and global inflation risks resurfacing amidst high oil prices and currency volatility. The firm suggests cash-flow focused accrual strategies across the credit spectrum, while warning of potential upward pressure on bond yields due to renewed crude price or rupee volatility.

Maintaining a neutral allocation stance on precious metals, particularly gold and silver, the report leans towards gold due to ongoing central bank purchases and a reduction in speculative excess in global gold markets. Ashish Shanker, MD and CEO of Motilal Oswal Private Wealth, notes the increasing influence of AI-led earnings and infrastructure cycles on global markets, with countries like South Korea and Taiwan leading the upcycle while India showcases resilience through robust domestic macroeconomic fundamentals.

India faces challenges from geopolitical uncertainties, high crude prices, sluggish earnings momentum, and a lack of significant direct AI-related investments. However, the country’s fundamentals remain strong, supported by healthy GDP growth, stable inflation, robust forex reserves, and improving corporate balance sheets. Shanker highlights record GST collections, resilient urban demand, and positive signs of rural recovery as factors reinforcing confidence in India’s long-term consumption and investment-driven growth trajectory.
