Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar criticized the Central Government’s decision to ban sugar exports, labeling it as economically disastrous for Maharashtra’s cooperative sector. Pawar, speaking in Pune, urged an immediate reconsideration of the policy to prevent the financial collapse of sugar mills. He emphasized that the ban hampers cash flow needed by factories to pay farmers the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP).
Pawar highlighted that the export ban coincides with excess sugar production in the state, making it challenging for mills to survive. He stressed that the government’s move eliminates a crucial source of liquidity for the industry. Pawar also called for government support due to damage caused by unseasonal rains.
Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for domestic austerity amid global instability, Pawar emphasized the need for fiscal discipline while ensuring common citizens are not unduly burdened. He pointed out concerns over rising fuel and edible oil prices affecting the rural economy. Pawar urged leaders to take the Prime Minister’s appeal seriously and maintain consistency in their actions.
Demanding an all-party meeting convened by the Prime Minister to address the national situation, Pawar questioned the ruling party’s delay in considering fuel conservation measures. He emphasized the importance of reducing administrative expenses following the Prime Minister’s call for austerity. Pawar advised against mere symbolic gestures and stressed the need for sustained efforts in cost-cutting measures.
