Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan expressed disappointment as his chance to officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 was shattered when he was denied entry into the United States. Despite holding valid documentation and a proper visa, Artan was removed from FIFA’s list of tournament officials after US immigration authorities stopped him at Miami International Airport.
The reason for the denial remains undisclosed, but it is noted that Somalia is among the countries affected by travel restrictions imposed by the previous US administration. Artan, in an interview with the New York Times, shared his heartbreak over the situation, emphasizing his lifelong dream to participate in the World Cup.
Artan recounted enduring an 11-hour immigration interview, followed by detention and eventual deportation despite having all the necessary paperwork. After the prolonged questioning, he was placed in a holding cell for several hours before being sent back to Istanbul, Turkey, missing out on the tournament he aspired to officiate.
FIFA confirmed Artan’s exclusion from the World Cup, stating that he would not be able to participate due to the entry denial by US authorities. The organization clarified that it does not influence visa decisions and has been informed that Artan’s status will not change for the event.
A senior advisor from Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports verified Artan’s denied entry, highlighting that he was carrying valid travel documents.
