Star wrestler Vinesh Phogat has criticized the Haryana Wrestling Association for what she perceives as unfair selection criteria for the Federation Cup 2026. She expressed frustration over the decision to limit trial opportunities to specific groups, excluding certain medallists and wrestlers unable to compete due to age restrictions in 2025. Phogat questioned the rationale behind these exclusions, highlighting the impact on deserving athletes.
Phogat raised concerns about the implications of the association’s selection criteria, stating that it could prematurely end the careers of dedicated wrestlers. She emphasized the significance of major tournaments like the Asian Games and the World Championships, labeling them as every player’s dream. Phogat criticized the rules for potentially hindering the future prospects of athletes who have dedicated years to representing their country.
The wrestler strongly advocated for fair trials and open selection processes at both state and national levels. Phogat highlighted the importance of recognizing talent on the mat and expressed disappointment over the lack of opportunities for new talent to emerge in Indian wrestling. She called for interventions from Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Nayab Saini to address the concerns and ensure justice for wrestlers in the state.
