Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph C. Vijay is scheduled to travel to New Delhi on Wednesday for his first official visit since taking office. During the visit, he plans to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to request increased financial aid for Tamil Nadu and expedited approvals for key infrastructure projects. Vijay is expected to depart for Delhi on Wednesday and return to Chennai the same day.
The Chief Minister aims to advocate for more central support for infrastructure development, unresolved financial allocations, industrial growth initiatives, welfare programs, and essential connectivity projects crucial for Tamil Nadu’s economic progress. This visit holds political significance following the recent electoral success of Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in the state. The TVK emerged as the largest party in the Assembly elections, securing 108 seats out of 234, disrupting the long-standing political dominance of other major parties.
Despite being the largest party, the TVK fell short of the majority mark, leading to post-election political negotiations. Vijay garnered support from various parties like the Congress, Left parties, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), enabling the formation of a coalition government, a departure from the state’s traditional single-party or alliance-led governance. This shift signifies a significant change in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
