Inspector General of Police K. Bhavaneeswari has been appointed to lead the newly established ‘Singappen’ Special Task Force (STF) in Tamil Nadu, aimed at enhancing women’s safety and public security infrastructure. This move is part of the state government’s strategy to bolster preventive policing, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms to ensure women’s safety. The STF will focus on preventing and protecting against crimes targeting women, equipped with modern technology to identify threats and intervene swiftly when necessary.
The Singappen Special Task Force, a key initiative of the C. Joseph Vijay-led government, will concentrate on enhancing safety in public spaces for women. It will be responsible for identifying and monitoring areas prone to criminal activities, increasing police visibility, and strengthening surveillance in places like bus terminals, railway stations, and educational institutions. Regular patrols will be conducted in locations frequented by women and young people to prevent unlawful activities and enhance women’s sense of security.
In addition to its policing functions, the Singappen Task Force will provide support by promptly addressing complaints involving women, facilitating victim rescues, and offering timely access to support services. Collaboration with departments like Social Welfare and Education, along with partnerships with non-governmental organizations, will aid in raising awareness and promoting community involvement in women’s safety efforts. The Special Task Force will operate under the direct supervision of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, with dedicated posts being created at Police Headquarters to support its functions.
