As Tamil Nadu gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections, strict measures have been implemented to regulate liquor sales in line with the Model Code of Conduct. The Election Commission of India guidelines aim to prevent the misuse of alcohol as an electoral inducement, leading to heightened monitoring of Tasmac outlets. Individuals are now restricted to purchasing limited quantities of alcohol to prevent unlawful possession, with clear instructions issued for enforcement.
The revised norms specify capped limits for liquor purchases, including 4.5 litres of Indian Made Foreign Spirits (IMFS) or imported liquor, 7.8 litres of beer, and up to nine litres of wine. Compliance teams are tasked with overseeing adherence to these restrictions across Tamil Nadu. Transactions at the state’s 4,787 Tasmac outlets will be closely monitored through a centralized digital system based in Chennai, emphasizing real-time data uploads and mandatory billing for transparency.
To combat bulk buying tendencies during election periods, stringent actions are being taken to deter large-scale purchases for private functions. Authorities emphasize that such activities will not be tolerated, warning of severe consequences for violators. Punitive measures, including legal repercussions and license cancellations, are part of the efforts to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure fair elections.
