Telugu Desam Party’s National Working President, Nara Lokesh, questioned the Congress party’s opposition to the Constitution Amendment Bill, which aimed to ensure a fair increase in parliamentary seats for all states. The bill, which was defeated in the Lok Sabha last month, sought to expedite the implementation of 33% reservation for women in legislatures through delimitation based on the 2011 Census.
Lokesh, who serves as a minister in the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, highlighted that the NDA proposed the Delimitation Bill to address the existing imbalance and provide a proportional rise in parliamentary seats for all states. He emphasized the need for reapportionment as the allocation of seats in the House of the People has been frozen since the 1971 Census, with South Indian states facing potential loss of representation compared to the northern states post-2026 Census.
Questioning the Congress party’s stance, Lokesh pointed out the implications of maintaining the current allocation under Article 81 after the 2026 Census and criticized the opposition to a constitutional mechanism designed to prevent the diminishing representation of South India in the future.
