Over 6,000 Afghan refugees came back to Afghanistan from Pakistan in a single day, as reported by Afghanistan’s High Commission for Addressing Returnees’ Problems. They entered through the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings, receiving necessary government support upon arrival. Additionally, 471 refugees returned from Iran on the same day.
In 2025, around 2.8 million Afghan refugees returned home, according to Xinhua news agency. Despite this, more than 6 million Afghan refugees remain in Pakistan and Iran, with both countries encouraging undocumented Afghans to return. Recently, 398 Afghan prisoners were released from Pakistani jails and sent back to Afghanistan during Eid al-Fitr, with a key border crossing reopening for Afghan migrants.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed that over 86,000 Afghan migrants returned from Iran and Pakistan within a month, raising concerns about reintegration challenges and limited host community capacity. The returnees face difficulties in accessing essential services, and the report underlines the need for sustained monitoring and international coordination to ensure their successful reintegration.
