Just before the upcoming re-election in Falta Assembly constituency in Diamond Harbour, a Trinamool Congress leader associated with party candidate Jahangir Khan has been taken into custody by the police. Falta Panchayat Samiti vice-president Saidul Khan was apprehended by Falta police station officers on charges of attempted murder and inciting political violence.
There have been longstanding accusations against Saidul, including attempted murder and instigating political unrest. Following a raid on Saidul’s residence by Falta police to probe these allegations, he was arrested. The Trinamool Congress has not yet officially responded to this development.
In compliance with the Election Commission’s directives, a re-election is scheduled for May 21 in Falta, with results set to be disclosed on May 24 amidst a shifting political landscape in the state.
The BJP has assumed power in the state, displacing the Trinamool Congress government. The new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, is slated to convene an administrative meeting in Diamond Harbour and subsequently campaign for the repoll in Falta.
Jahangir Khan, the Trinamool candidate for the constituency, made a public appearance in Falta after a prolonged absence. Khan’s party office in Serampore was vandalized by BJP workers following the state’s political transition. Jahangir expressed concerns over the administration’s alleged targeting of Trinamool members and refrained from public appearances to maintain peace.
