The Tripura government has introduced two significant infrastructure projects in Agartala, including a Rs 1,000-crore flood protection initiative and a river-linking plan to bring water from the Gomati River to the state capital. Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the aim to reduce reliance on groundwater by tapping into sustainable surface water sources for various needs.
The flood mitigation project involves constructing protective embankments and installing pumping stations to enhance the city’s drainage system and minimize urban flooding risks. The initiative will be executed in phases based on funding availability. In light of past devastating floods, Saha urged all departments to stay vigilant and ensure preparedness during the monsoon season.
Additionally, the government is exploring the feasibility of diverting surface water from the Gomati River to reduce Agartala’s dependence on iron-rich groundwater. Detailed studies will assess technical aspects, water availability, and environmental considerations before a final decision is made. The proposed river-linking project, starting with the Gomati River, aims to address water challenges and could potentially extend to other rivers in the state.
Tripura boasts multiple rivers, some of which flow into Bangladesh, raising concerns about water quality. To address this, plans are underway to establish a water treatment plant to purify canal water before it enters the neighboring country. The government is committed to addressing water-related issues for both local residents and those across the border.
