US President Donald Trump clarified that the United States is not in a state of war with Venezuela and emphasized that elections in Venezuela are not imminent. Trump highlighted the need for stabilizing the country and rebuilding its infrastructure after the capture of leader Nicolas Maduro. In an interview with NBC News, Trump stated that holding elections in Venezuela within the next 30 days is unrealistic given the current conditions.

Trump outlined that the primary focus of Washington is on restoring order and reviving the economy in Venezuela. He stressed the importance of nurturing the country back to stability, indicating that this process will require time. Additionally, Trump mentioned that US oil companies could have a significant role in reconstructing Venezuela’s energy infrastructure, a task that he estimated could be completed in less than 18 months.

The President mentioned that a substantial amount of funding would be necessary for the rebuilding efforts, with oil companies expected to cover the costs initially. Trump suggested that the United States might provide some subsidies for the project, but he emphasized that the companies would eventually recoup their investments. He stated, “A tremendous amount of money will have to be spent, and the oil companies will spend it, and then they’ll get reimbursed by us or through revenue.”

Trump rejected assertions that the US is at war with Venezuela, clarifying that the conflict lies with individuals involved in drug trafficking and other criminal activities. He attributed Venezuela’s challenges to its leadership, accusing them of exporting crime and instability. Maduro was apprehended in Caracas during a US operation and faces charges related to narco-terrorism and cocaine importation.

Regarding the leadership in Venezuela, Trump asserted his authority by stating, “Me,” when asked who ultimately holds power in the country. He noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been actively engaged in communication with Venezuela’s leadership, highlighting Rubio’s fluency in Spanish and their strong relationship. Trump also mentioned the readiness of the US for a potential second military intervention if diplomatic efforts falter, although he expressed optimism that such action would not be required.

Trump addressed criticism about the lack of congressional approval for the operation, stating that there is congressional support for US actions. He declined to provide further details on the extent of congressional awareness regarding the situation.
