The Ukrainian Parliament named Serhii Koretskyi as the new Prime Minister on Thursday in a government reshuffle led by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Koretskyi emphasized the priority of strengthening Ukraine’s defense forces and expanding the defense industry to enhance capabilities for military operations and frontline defense.
Koretskyi also highlighted the government’s commitment to preparing for winter, supporting citizens and businesses, and meeting social obligations by ensuring timely payments of pensions and public services funding. Additionally, he stressed the importance of cooperation with international partners to secure resources and optimize the use of international aid.
With a background in leading state energy company Naftogaz, Koretskyi’s appointment comes during a challenging period for Ukraine, facing ongoing Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure. His experience in the energy sector is deemed valuable as Ukraine braces for what could be a difficult winter ahead.
Zelensky’s recent cabinet reshuffle aims to align foreign policy priorities with officials possessing relevant expertise. The changes, discussed with outgoing Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, necessitated a Cabinet of Ministers renewal, marking a strategic shift in Ukraine’s governance.
