UN experts have expressed concern over the fuel blockade imposed on Cuba by US President Donald Trump in January, labeling it as “energy starvation” in the country. The experts highlighted that this condition has severely impacted essential services necessary for a dignified life in Cuba. The Trump administration’s oil restrictions and threats of military action against the Cuban government have exacerbated the situation, disrupting daily life and impeding the enjoyment of various human rights in Cuba.
The blockade has led to fuel shortages, hindering access to hospitals and schools for the Cuban population. Reports indicate a significant backlog of surgeries, including those for children, and delays in the national immunization program affecting thousands of infants. The experts emphasized that such energy starvation violates international human rights standards and called on the US to cease using coercive measures in this manner.
US President Donald Trump’s recent comments in Palm Beach, Florida, hinted at US intervention in Cuba following actions in the Middle East. He mentioned plans to take control of Cuba swiftly and positioned the USS Abraham Lincoln near Cuba’s coast upon its return. In response, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez criticized the US for threatening military action to “liberate” Cuba after decades of economic embargo, calling it hypocritical and cynical.
