An unexpected 11-degree decline in maximum temperature has been observed in Kolkata during the spring season following two days of rain. Previously, the temperature had consistently stayed above 30 degrees Celsius. However, due to continuous overnight rainfall starting on Friday and continuing through Saturday, the temperature sharply dropped by 11 degrees, bringing a sudden winter-like chill to Kolkata and South Bengal.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that this weather pattern is expected to persist until the upcoming Friday, with heavy rainfall anticipated across the entire state, spanning from North to South Bengal. On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata and its vicinity was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, which is 11 degrees below the usual levels. Simultaneously, the minimum temperature was noted at 19.2 degrees Celsius, marking a deviation of 4.4 degrees from the norm.
A meteorological department official mentioned, “A Western Disturbance is currently stretching from North Haryana to North Chhattisgarh, while a low-pressure trough is positioned across Uttar Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is present at an altitude ranging from 3.1 to 5.8 kilometers above sea level. These conducive conditions, along with a substantial inflow of moisture from the Bay of Bengal, are likely to result in thunderstorms in various West Bengal districts within the next 24 hours.”
As per the weather forecast, there is a chance of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in multiple areas, including Jhargram, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and Kolkata. In the remaining districts, isolated locations may experience light rain with thunderstorms. Monday may see light rain with thunderstorms in isolated spots across districts like East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, and West Midnapore, while the rest of South Bengal is expected to have mainly dry weather.
