The United States is working towards a more balanced trade relationship with China, as stated by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during a congressional panel. Greer emphasized the goal of reducing dependence on Beijing without escalating tensions between the two economic giants. The Trump administration’s tariff strategy has already led to a significant decrease in the US goods trade deficit, particularly with China, signaling a shift in trade patterns.

Greer outlined the administration’s objective of maintaining stability and promoting reciprocity in trade with China. The focus is on achieving balanced trade and establishing a managed trade relationship to benefit Americans while avoiding unexpected developments and escalations. Washington aims to increase Chinese imports of American goods like agricultural products, aircraft, and medical devices, while ensuring access to critical supplies such as rare-earth minerals.

In addition to seeking a balanced trade relationship, the US intends to continue pressing Beijing on market access and purchasing commitments. Greer highlighted the strategic importance of maintaining a stable supply chain, especially concerning rare-earth minerals, which are crucial for various industries. The issue of China’s role in supplying precursor chemicals for manufacturing fentanyl was also raised, with the US using tariffs as leverage to address this concern and urging Beijing to take action.

The upcoming talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to address these trade issues and prioritize US interests while maintaining stability in the relationship. Lawmakers from both political parties recognize China’s significant influence on US trade policy, with Republicans supporting the administration’s efforts to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on Chinese imports, while Democrats express concerns about the impact of tariffs on consumers and businesses, as well as uncertainties in global markets.
