At Taratala in South Kolkata, an under-construction warehouse’s roof collapsed, trapping 50 to 60 workers. Thirteen workers have been rescued, with five in critical condition and taken to SSKM Hospital for treatment.
Rescue operations involving the Indian Army, NDRF, Fire Brigade, and Kolkata Police are underway urgently. Cranes and gas cutters are being used to clear the collapsed roof debris.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will visit the site, while State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul is overseeing the rescue efforts. Locals initiated the rescue, followed by official teams after the roof suddenly caved in.
The collapse is believed to have occurred during welding work, with suspicions that heavy rain weakened the structure. Rescuers are working to free trapped workers, with cries for help audible from the rubble.
Efforts are focused on swift debris removal using cranes. State Minister Indranil Khan and other officials are on-site, emphasizing the priority of rescue operations.
A control room at the state secretariat, Nabanna, has been set up, with ambulances on standby to transport the injured to hospitals.
