Following searches in various areas around Kolkata, the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) has apprehended five drug traffickers, including a woman, and confiscated illicit drugs valued at more than Rs 1 crore.
In a recent operation, the STF raided Canal West Road in north Kolkata, arresting Asma Khatun Peyada (42) and seizing 1.325 kilograms of heroin from her residence. The police plan to present her in court for custody.
Additionally, four individuals were arrested on January 25 in connection with the same case, and a vehicle was impounded in the North 24 Parganas district. The authorities seized 3 kilograms of ‘power’ and 410 grams of heroin during this operation.
The arrested persons include Md Rafique (55), Abhishek Karmakar (30), Hasem Ali (30), and Brindaban Das Bairagya (34), hailing from various locations in and around Kolkata.
A senior officer from the West Bengal STF mentioned that the total arrests in this case have now reached five, with the seized contraband’s grey market value exceeding Rs 1 crore. Investigations are ongoing to uncover more about the drug trafficking network and its associates.
According to police sources, the previous arrests were kept confidential to apprehend other gang members. The recent arrest of the woman trafficker was a result of information obtained during interrogations of the initial four suspects.
