In a tragic incident in Odari village, Madhya Pradesh, a woman and her eight-year-old niece were struck by lightning, resulting in their deaths. The lightning struck while the woman, identified as Itto Bai, and her niece Safina Singh were collecting ‘Mahua’ flowers under a tree near their home. Another woman with them was critically injured due to the electric shock.
Local authorities and family members were alerted immediately after the incident. The police from Papaundh station arrived at the scene, launched an investigation, and arranged for the bodies to be moved for formal procedures. This unfortunate event occurred amidst heightened pre-monsoon activity in the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and rain in 38 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Various districts have already experienced thunderstorms and rain, with forecasts predicting more storms and rain in several other districts. An ‘Orange Alert’ for strong winds has been issued for specific districts.
Meteorologists have noted that the Southwest Monsoon is delayed in reaching Madhya Pradesh, currently stalled near Telangana. The monsoon’s arrival in the state is expected to be delayed by about 8 to 10 days from the normal onset date. Authorities are advising residents, especially those in rural areas, to take precautions during thunderstorms to prevent further casualties.
