Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated festivals in India and among the Indian diaspora worldwide. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. In 2024, Diwali will be celebrated on November 1st, 2024 (Friday)

The Significance of Diwali

Diwali 2024

Diwali holds immense significance in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhism, albeit with different interpretations and stories. For Hindus, it marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya celebrated his return by lighting rows of oil lamps, which is why Diwali is associated with the lighting of lamps and fireworks.

For Jains, Diwali commemorates the nirvana, or spiritual awakening, of Lord Mahavira. Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, the day when Guru Hargobind Ji was released from imprisonment. Buddhists, especially the Newar Buddhists in Nepal, celebrate it to honor Emperor Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism.

The Five Days of Diwali

Diwali is not just a single day of celebration; it spans five days, each with its own significance, So let’s understand the significance of each day and when is Diwali in 2024?

Dhanteras October 29 2024
  1. Dhanteras (October 29, 2024): The festival begins with Dhanteras, a day dedicated to wealth and prosperity. People buy gold, silver, and utensils, believing it brings good fortune.
  2. Naraka Chaturdashi (October 31, 2024): Also known as Choti Diwali, this day commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. Homes are cleaned, and people decorate them with rangoli and lamps.
  3. Diwali (November 1, 2024): The main festival day is celebrated with prayers, especially to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Families light oil lamps, burst fireworks, and exchange sweets and gifts.
  4. Govardhan Puja (November 2, 2024): This day marks Lord Krishna’s lifting of Mount Govardhan to protect the villagers from torrential rains. It is celebrated with a special puja and feasts.
  5. Bhai Dooj (November 3, 2024): The final day of the Diwali festival celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being, and brothers give gifts in return.

Diwali 2024: A Time for Togetherness

Diwali in 2024 falls on a Thursday, providing an extended weekend for many people to spend time with family and friends. The festival is a time for sharing joy, creating memories, and indulging in delicious sweets and treats.

Whether you celebrate with a grand puja, a simple gathering, or just by lighting a single lamp, Diwali is a reminder of the power of light and goodness in our lives. Mark your calendars for November 1, 2024, and get ready to immerse yourself in the brilliance and warmth of Diwali!
