Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has taken legal action by approaching the Calcutta High Court to request the cancellation of an FIR filed against him by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding a case of mismatched signatures among legislators. The High Court has issued a notice to the West Bengal government, a party in the case, following Banerjee’s petition. The state counsel will present arguments in the upcoming hearing next week.
Banerjee, who has been questioned twice by CID officials, is at the center of an inquiry concerning discrepancies in the signatures of several Trinamool legislators on a resolution related to opposition bench appointments in the West Bengal assembly. The issue arose when expelled Trinamool legislators pointed out signature mismatches in a resolution submitted to the assembly secretariat, leading to the CID taking over the investigation.
Speaker Rathindra Bose had requested a resolution signed by Trinamool legislators supporting certain appointments, including Leader of the Opposition and Chief Whip, which was later submitted. The CID probe was initiated after the discovery of signature inconsistencies, with the matter now under the scrutiny of the High Court.
