E-commerce giant Amazon announced plans to lay off 16,000 employees worldwide as part of additional organisational adjustments. This marks the second significant round of layoffs within about three months for the company. Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, explained that the changes would affect some of their team members.
Galetti acknowledged the challenging nature of the news and emphasized the company’s efforts to strengthen its structure by reducing layers and bureaucracy. The layoffs will impact approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon, with a focus on supporting affected employees through various means. Amazon will provide transition support, including severance pay and outplacement services, for those unable to secure a new role internally.
The company clarified that the job cuts would begin by offering most US-based employees a 90-day window to seek internal job opportunities. Amazon also stated its commitment to continue hiring and investing in key areas essential for its future growth. Galetti reassured that while the layoffs follow a previous reduction of 14,000 roles, it is not indicative of a recurring pattern but rather a strategic evaluation process to enhance customer service and innovation.
