Assam will implement a supplementary Higher Secondary (HS) final examination starting from the next academic session. This move will allow students who fail in a few subjects to enhance their performance without losing an entire academic year. The examination, announced by Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) Chairman Ramesh Chandra Jain, will take place about two months after the HS final results are declared.
The introduction of this supplementary exam aims to minimize academic setbacks for students and aligns with the reforms proposed in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Students who do not pass the HS final exam in certain subjects can participate in the supplementary test to progress in their academic journey without waiting for the next annual exam cycle.
Chairman Jain highlighted that this system, already in place in various educational boards nationwide, has successfully reduced dropout rates and provided students with a second chance within the same academic year. Assam is taking steps to implement this reform under the NEP framework, positioning itself as one of the first states to introduce such a comprehensive supplementary exam system at the Higher Secondary level.
To facilitate a smooth transition to the new system, arrangements similar to those for students taking the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam will be extended where necessary. This announcement follows the amalgamation of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), forming the unified Assam State School Education Board with Jain as its inaugural Chairman.
Educators view this initiative as highly beneficial for students, offering them an extra opportunity to clear exams and pursue higher education seamlessly. It also brings Assam’s school education system closer to the goals outlined in the National Education Policy.
