One person died, and multiple individuals suffered burn injuries in a fire incident in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district, on Holi day, as per police reports. The deceased’s identity remains unknown, with ongoing efforts to establish it. The injured have been rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The fire erupted in a line of shops near Madhyamgram railway station, causing panic in the vicinity, according to local sources. Witnesses heard a series of cylinder explosions, leading to the rapid spread of flames from one shop to another. Firefighters, along with officers from Madhyamgram police station, responded to the scene with four fire engines to control the situation.
Reports indicate that the fire destroyed a restaurant, a sweet shop, and other establishments along Madhyamgram Station Road. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, initial findings from the fire department suggest a gas cylinder explosion as a possible trigger. The flames extended to nearby structures, posing challenges for firefighters in the densely populated area.
After nearly an hour of firefighting efforts, the blaze was eventually contained. Subsequently, a charred body was found inside one of the burnt shops by firefighters. Barasat SDPO Vidyagar Ajinkya Ananta mentioned that firefighting personnel and police swiftly responded to the fire, with efforts to control the flames amidst a growing crowd at the scene. The firefighting operation faced disruptions due to the increasing crowd, necessitating their relocation from the area.
