Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has filed a police complaint against ex-legislator S.G. Esmatur Mominin, alleging that his recent speech could stoke communal tensions before the upcoming elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). Sangma pointed to a video circulating on social media showing Mominin addressing a gathering on the evening of March 9, following an earlier alleged physical assault incident. The incident reportedly took place at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura when Mominin submitted his nomination papers for the GHADC elections.
Sangma claimed that Mominin’s speech contained inflammatory election rhetoric, which could worsen existing political and social sensitivities in the region, especially concerning non-tribal candidates participating in the district council elections in the Garo Hills area. He expressed concerns that such statements in a charged political environment might deepen divisions and incite animosity among communities. Sangma also refuted Mominin’s assertion that he and two other public figures had supported the ex-legislator’s nomination and the involvement of non-tribal candidates in the polls, emphasizing that he had no discussions with Mominin or provided any endorsement.
Sangma, noting the presence of more than ten individuals in the video, has urged the police to take action against Mominin under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 192, 196, 353, and 57, or other applicable laws.
