Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge has instructed senior police officials to take action against pubs, bars, and other liquor-serving establishments in Bengaluru to prevent underage drinking. This move aims to address concerns about alcohol and substance abuse among young people in the city. The Minister emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards establishments facilitating underage drinking, stressing the importance of safeguarding youth from such harmful practices.
An official statement highlighted a study involving over 4,000 students from various educational institutions in Bengaluru. The research revealed alarming statistics, indicating that a significant portion of adolescents in the city are at risk of health issues due to alcohol and tobacco consumption. The study, conducted by reputable institutions, found higher rates of alcohol and tobacco use among Bengaluru’s youth compared to national and state averages.
In response to the study’s findings, the Home Minister urged strict age verification measures at all establishments serving alcohol. The directive mandates thorough age checks before entry and alcohol service, with severe consequences for those violating the rules. Establishments failing to comply with the regulations will face legal action, holding owners and managers accountable for any underage drinking incidents on their premises.
To ensure enforcement, the Minister emphasized the importance of functional CCTV surveillance at entry points and within establishments. Additionally, collaborative efforts with educational institutions, parents, and community groups will be made to curb underage access to alcohol, tobacco, and narcotics in Bengaluru.
