The Ladakh Marathon, known as the world’s highest AIMS-certified marathon, is scheduled to make a comeback for its 13th edition in 2026. The event will run from September 10 to 13 amidst the challenging terrain of Ladakh. Registration for all six races, including the Silk Route Ultra and Khardung La Challenger, has opened on the official website.
The races will encompass the Marathon, Half Marathon, 11.2km Run, 5km Run for Fun, in addition to the two ultra races. Age requirements vary from 12 years for the 5km race to 24 years for the Silk Route Ultra, based on the date of September 13, 2026. Participants in timed races must meet qualifying standards within a specified timeframe to match the demands of racing at altitudes exceeding 11,500 feet.
For the Khardung La Challenge and Silk Route Ultra, participation is by application only and has strict limitations. These races, reaching heights of 17,618 feet at Khardung La, are reserved for runners with established marathon and ultra-distance experience, subject to document verification and medical clearance.
Chewang Motup Goba, Chairperson of the High Altitude Sports Foundation and founder of the Ladakh Marathon, emphasized the unique challenges of running in Ladakh due to altitude, terrain, and air thinness. The eligibility criteria aim to ensure that all participants are adequately prepared for one of the most demanding endurance challenges globally.
In 2025, the Ladakh Marathon attracted runners from all 36 States and Union Territories of India for the first time, highlighting its national significance as a premier endurance event in the Himalayas. The event promotes eco-friendly practices such as using personal hydration packs, biodegradable cups, and reusable serveware to minimize environmental impact.
Dry pit sanitation systems are deployed along the course to conserve water, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility in a region facing water scarcity challenges. The Ladakh Marathon underscores the importance of balancing high-altitude sports with sustainable practices.
