Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal has challenged the BJP, daring them to cut his tongue if he has made any historically incorrect statements. This challenge comes after he equated the bravery of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan. Sapkal responded to a BJP legislator’s reward offer for anyone willing to cut his tongue by asserting that if he has erred in his historical references, he is open to facing the consequences.
Sapkal emphasized that if his words have any impact on issues like protecting Indian farmers, ensuring fair agricultural prices, eliminating farmer debts, or promoting harmony between communities, he is willing to face the consequences. However, he firmly stated that he will not back down if the intent is to silence his criticism of the BJP’s actions. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the comparison between Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan, labeling it as disrespectful and unacceptable.
Fadnavis highlighted the revered status of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra and India, known for his valor, justice, and the establishment of the Maratha Empire. In contrast, Tipu Sultan’s legacy remains contentious due to his treatment of Hindus and his alliances. Fadnavis demanded an apology from Sapkal for the comparison, stating that such remarks only serve to divide and offend those who hold Shivaji Maharaj in high esteem.
The controversy led to clashes between BJP workers and Congress supporters outside the Congress Bhavan, resulting in injuries to nine individuals, including journalists and police personnel. Sapkal challenged the BJP to also condemn past controversial remarks made by certain leaders on Shivaji Maharaj. Pune Police registered cases against both Sapkal and BJP leaders for their roles in the incident, with Sapkal accusing the BJP of trying to stir trouble.
Sapkal clarified that his statements were misconstrued and accused the BJP of deliberately misinterpreting his words. He asserted that the BJP should not lecture others on the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, emphasizing his pride in the historical figure and his commitment to speaking out against perceived injustices.
