A man has been handed a 20-year rigorous imprisonment term by a Special NDPS Court in Palanpur, Gujarat, in connection with a case involving the seizure of 16.575 kg of charas worth over Rs one crore. The judgment was delivered on July 9, finding Samir Ahmed Sheikh Nagori guilty under the NDPS Act based on prosecution evidence. Alongside the prison sentence, a fine of Rs two lakh was imposed, with an additional one-year imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
The case, initiated in 2020 by the ATS after intercepting a vehicle based on specific intelligence, led to the recovery of 16.575 kg of charas valued at Rs 1,00,51,800. The Special NDPS Court emphasized the serious societal threat posed by trafficking narcotic drugs in commercial quantities, especially to the youth. Considering the gravity of the offence and its broader impact, a stringent sentence was imposed on the convicted individual.
Further legal actions against the remaining accused will proceed separately as per the law. Originating from an interception near Palanpur in Banaskantha district, the case involved the transportation of charas from Ludhiana, Punjab, concealed in apple cartons. Two individuals from Maharashtra, including Samir Shaikh, were apprehended at the scene, with another alleged conspirator arrested in Ahmedabad during the investigation.
The conviction falls under the NDPS Act, which mandates severe penalties for crimes involving commercial quantities of narcotic drugs. Offences of this nature can result in up to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with significant fines.
