Mumbai Indians players wore black armbands during their recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at Wankhede Stadium to show respect and support following the unfortunate passing of a member of their support staff’s daughter. The team’s gesture was a display of solidarity with the grieving family.
In the match, Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bat. Notably, senior player and former captain Rohit Sharma was absent due to a hamstring injury. The team made several changes to their lineup, introducing Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, Robin Minz, and Trent Boult, while Quinton de Kock, Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur, and Krish Bhagat were left out.
Keshav Maharaj was signed by Mumbai Indians to replace the injured Mitchell Santner for the IPL 2026 season. Santner’s absence was due to a shoulder injury. Maharaj, despite limited IPL experience with only two matches for the Rajasthan Royals in 2024, brings valuable franchise experience and leadership qualities, having recently led Pretoria Capitals to the SA20 title.
Captain Hardik Pandya, speaking at the toss, emphasized the team’s focus on batting well and aiming for a competitive score. Mumbai Indians are facing a crucial challenge against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Wankhede Stadium, with their IPL 2026 campaign hanging in the balance. With just two wins in seven games and tied on points with the bottom-ranked Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians are in need of a turnaround to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
