Ishaan Tharoor, a prominent international affairs columnist and son of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, was recently laid off by The Washington Post. This move is part of a significant newsroom restructuring that saw nearly one-third of the newspaper’s workforce being let go. Tharoor, who had been with the publication for almost 12 years, expressed sadness for his colleagues and the newsroom in a social media post.
Tharoor confirmed his departure from The Washington Post on social media, mentioning that most of the International staff were also affected by the layoffs. He expressed his sorrow for the talented journalists who had served the publication internationally. Tharoor highlighted his pride in launching the WorldView column in 2017 and thanked the loyal readers for their support over the years.
The layoffs at The Washington Post reportedly impacted various departments, including international reporting, metro coverage, editing desks, sports journalism, and cultural coverage. The restructuring exercise also involved the closure of the sports desk and the scaling back of several international bureaus. The newspaper, founded in 1877, has transitioned from a local publication to a globally recognized institution over the years.
Tharoor shared a poignant image from inside the newsroom, featuring a poster with the newspaper’s famous slogan, “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” The layoffs affected a significant portion of the Washington Post’s workforce, although the exact number of employees let go has not been publicly disclosed. The cuts have been described as a major transformation in the publication’s focus and operations, impacting various editorial teams and sections.
