After a period of quiet, Swapna Suresh has reappeared in Kerala’s political discussions, reviving the controversies surrounding gold smuggling and the Life Mission housing project that previously embroiled the Pinarayi Vijayan government. Recently, Swapna faced questioning by a Special Investigation Team in Thiruvananthapuram for nearly three hours, where she presented crucial documents and digital evidence, making serious accusations against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his ex-Principal Secretary, M. Sivasankar.
Following her interrogation, investigators are now examining Swapna’s statements and evidence in conjunction with existing findings, with plans to expand the inquiry soon. The Vigilance Department is investigating allegations that the Life Mission housing project in Wadakkanchery was misused for a commission racket involving funds from the UAE-based Red Crescent. Swapna reiterated claims of kickbacks in construction contracts and implicated M. Sivasankar in the transactions, also alleging the involvement of then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in crucial decisions related to the project.
This development marks the third phase of a long-standing political saga in Kerala, spanning nearly six years. Despite facing intense criticism, Pinarayi Vijayan’s government secured a second consecutive term in the 2021 elections. Swapna’s reappearance amidst a new political landscape, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front in power, has added a fresh twist to the ongoing investigation, intensifying the political stakes in the state.
The Vigilance team is now reviewing the fresh evidence provided by Swapna to determine the next steps, which may involve summoning more witnesses, re-questioning officials like M. Sivasankar, or progressing towards filing a chargesheet. The unfolding events pose a critical question for Kerala’s political future – whether Swapna’s latest allegations will reshape the narrative or if Pinarayi Vijayan will emerge unscathed, as seen in the past.
