Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the importance of sports activities, skill development programs, and rehabilitation measures for the well-being and successful reintegration of inmates in the state’s correctional institutions. He stressed the need for inmates to acquire vocational skills during their prison terms to support their livelihood upon release back into society.
Saha emphasized that prison reforms should not only focus on security and infrastructure but also on the physical, mental, and emotional welfare of inmates. He directed officials to ensure proper nutrition, medical care, and overall well-being of prisoners. Additionally, expanding sports and recreational activities within correctional facilities was identified as beneficial for improving inmates’ mental health and aiding in their rehabilitation.
The meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, reviewed various aspects of prison administration, including infrastructure, inmate welfare, rehabilitation initiatives, and modernization efforts in line with contemporary standards. Jail (Home) and Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma expressed commitment to driving systemic reforms and enhancing security infrastructure in compliance with recent directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
Prisons Secretary Brijesh Pandey provided a detailed overview of the functioning of the Central Correctional Institution and other prisons in the state. He briefed the Chief Minister on inmate populations, provisions for food, healthcare, reading materials, sports facilities, and other amenities. Discussions also centered on strengthening prison reforms through improved infrastructure, enhanced rehabilitation programs, and skill development initiatives to facilitate successful inmate reintegration into society post-release.
