The White House has accused Iran of breaching a memorandum of understanding with the United States by attacking commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump authorized military strikes in response to Iran’s failure to uphold its commitments despite expressing interest in negotiations. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Iran’s actions, including firing on commercial vessels, led to the administration’s military response.
Leavitt emphasized that the recent military strikes were a direct consequence of Tehran’s violation of the agreement, particularly by targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump’s decision to respond militarily was driven by Iran’s disregard for the terms outlined in the memorandum of understanding.
Despite the military actions, diplomatic channels remain open, according to Leavitt. She mentioned that Trump is open to diplomacy but is also committed to ensuring Iran faces consequences for its actions. The United States has reestablished a naval blockade on vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports, with over 10,000 American military personnel enforcing the blockade.
Leavitt disclosed that the blockade, directed by President Trump, is fully operational for ships entering and leaving Iranian ports. The blockade has already redirected compliant vessels and disabled a non-compliant one within the first 24 hours. Additionally, the naval blockade does not affect ships not engaged in trade with Iranian ports, allowing the Strait to remain open for unaffected vessels.
Responding to queries about conflicting statements on diplomacy with Iran, Leavitt dismissed suggestions of discord within the administration. She clarified that both President Trump and Vice-President JD Vance are aligned in their approach, emphasizing that Operation Epic Fury had destabilized Iran’s leadership.
