Moving to a new country comes with its fair share of challenges—adapting to a new culture, dealing with unfamiliar financial systems, and securing long-term financial stability. One man who has made it his mission to bridge the financial knowledge gap for immigrants is Vrishin Subramanyam, the visionary founder and lead planner at CapitalWe. In a recent episode of the Indian Community Podcast, host Amit Gupta sat down with Vrishin to discuss his journey, the financial struggles immigrants face, and how his venture is helping them achieve financial freedom.

From New Delhi to the U.S.: Vrishin’s Journey

Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Vrishin moved to the United States at the age of 17 to attend the University of Illinois. Like many international students, he faced multiple challenges, from adjusting to a new academic system and making friends to navigating cultural differences and dealing with harsh Midwestern winters. However, one of the most daunting hurdles he encountered was understanding personal finance in the U.S.

“The U.S. tax code, different types of compensation, and the various pillars of wealth-building were completely new to me,” Vrishin recalls. “It was a steep learning curve.”

The Birth of CapitalWe: A COVID-Era Financial Revolution

After completing his studies, Vrishin embarked on a career in product management. However, his interest in financial planning grew when he started questioning investment strategies, retirement plans, and visa-related financial decisions.

His entrepreneurial journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic when he found himself with extra time to reflect and explore his passion for finance. Having already taken qualifying financial planning exams, he decided to launch CapitalWe, a company dedicated to providing financial planning services to immigrants.

“CapitalWe was a COVID baby,” Vrishin jokes. “With too much free time on my hands, I decided to turn my financial knowledge into a business.”

Why Financial Planning Matters for Immigrants

While immigrants, particularly Indian professionals in the U.S., are among the highest earners, Vrishin emphasizes that financial success is not just about maximizing wealth but optimizing life. Many immigrants are unfamiliar with the intricacies of financial planning in their new country, which can lead to missed opportunities and poor financial decisions.

Common Financial Challenges for Immigrants:

  • Understanding the U.S. Tax Code: Many immigrants struggle with tax planning and compliance.
  • Investment Strategies: Knowing where and how to invest money wisely is crucial for long-term financial security.
  • Retirement Planning: Understanding 401(k)s, IRAs, and other retirement accounts can be complex for newcomers.
  • Visa-Linked Financial Decisions: H-1B visa holders and other temporary residents must navigate unique financial considerations.

Bridging the Gap: CapitalWe’s Mission

CapitalWe’s core mission is to make financial wisdom accessible and actionable for immigrants. By offering personalized financial planning services, Vrishin aims to help clients make informed decisions about their wealth and future.

Unlike robo-advisors, which provide automated financial advice, CapitalWe prioritizes a human touch. “People don’t just want financial advice—they want peace of mind,” Vrishin explains. “Having a real person to guide you through important financial decisions makes a huge difference.”

The Entrepreneurial Mindset: Lessons from Vrishin

For those considering entrepreneurship, Vrishin has some key takeaways:

  1. Take the Leap: “You don’t have to know everything before you start. Entrepreneurship is about figuring things out along the way.”
  2. Financial Stability First: “I had saved enough money to sustain myself for a few years without an income, which gave me the freedom to experiment.”
  3. Leverage Your Unique Perspective: “Being an outsider in an industry can be an advantage because you see things differently and can innovate.”

Vrishin Subramanyam’s story is an inspiring roadmap for anyone looking to secure their financial future in a new country. His journey from a curious student to a financial planner and entrepreneur underscores the importance of financial literacy, especially for immigrants.

If you’re an immigrant looking to take control of your financial future, CapitalWe might just be the perfect partner on your journey to wealth and security.
